Bunions
Hallux valgus, conservative care and surgical referral when needed.
Bunions
Bunions develop slowly. The earlier they’re managed, the better your long-term options.
A bunion (hallux abducto valgus) is a structural change at the base of the big toe where the joint deviates outward and the toe drifts toward the second toe. It’s partly genetic, partly mechanical, and often becomes painful as it progresses or starts rubbing in shoes.
Common causes
- Family history (most common factor)
- Pronated foot mechanics overloading the joint
- Tight footwear, especially long-term
- Hypermobile joints
- Hallux limitus (stiff big toe joint)
How we treat it
- Detailed assessment of mechanics and joint range
- Footwear changes, wider toe box, lower heel
- Custom orthotics to reduce pronation load
- Padding, splints and toe spacers for comfort
- Surgical referral when conservative care isn’t enough
